Buying a watch in South Africa: types, brands and prices
Buying a watch in South Africa? Watchmaker or fashion brand, smartwatch or traditional, quartz or automatic, buying as a gift, and what to pay at each step.
It might be a 21st, a graduation, a promotion, or the first proper watch you buy for yourself. You walk into the jeweller, and the counter has everything: fashion watches with big logos, smartwatches lighting up with notifications, and a quiet corner of watches with glass backs and ticking movements. All of them say "watch". They're not the same purchase at all.
Start here if it's your first proper watch. Below: the three decisions that shape everything, how to buy a watch as a gift and roughly what each type costs, with links to the deeper guides where you want more.
What to decide first
Who is it for, and how will they wear it? Every day at the office, at the gym, on special occasions.
Do they want it to last? A watch to keep for decades points one way; a fun, fashionable piece points another.
What's the budget? Set it before the counter, including a little for a strap or sizing.
Decision 1: traditional watch or smartwatch
Smartwatches from Apple, Samsung, Garmin and Huawei track steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts, show messages and calls, and pay at the till. They need charging every day or every few days, they're tied to a phone, and they date as new models arrive every year. Huawei is the cheaper way in, and Garmin leans to sport and battery life. A traditional watch just tells the time, and a good one can be serviced and kept for decades. Plenty of people end up with one of each.
Decision 2: watchmaker or fashion brand
Watchmaker brands (Seiko, Citizen, Casio, Tissot, Hamilton, Longines) design and make their own watches and movements. Fashion labels such as Armani and Michael Kors license their names to watch companies (Fossil Group makes both) and design for style. A fashion watch is fine if you love the design. At the same price, a watchmaker's own brand usually gives you a better movement, better materials and better resale value. Our guide to watch brands by price band goes through the names at each step.
Decision 3: quartz, solar or automatic
Quartz and solar (like Citizen's Eco-Drive) keep excellent time with almost no fuss, while an automatic is wound by your wrist, costs more, needs servicing and is bought for the craft. Our automatic or quartz guide covers the trade-offs and the running costs.
Buying a watch as a gift
Size matters more than people expect. Check what they wear now: case size (36 to 40 mm is classic, 40 to 44 mm is bigger), strap or bracelet, and colour of metal. A steel bracelet usually needs links removed, which most jewellers do for free or a small fee; a leather or rubber strap fits straight away. Keep the box, papers and receipt, and ask about exchanges before you buy, since sized watches are often harder to return.
| Type | Price band |
|---|---|
| Fashion watch | R2,500 to R10,000 |
| Watchmaker, quartz or solar | R2,000 to R13,000 |
| Watchmaker, automatic | R8,000 to R25,000 |
| Budget smartwatch (Huawei Watch Fit and GT, last year's Galaxy Watch) | R2,000 to R5,000 |
| Smartwatch (Apple Watch SE and Series, Galaxy Watch, Garmin vivoactive) | R5,500 to R9,000 |
| Premium smartwatch (Apple Watch Ultra, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Garmin Venu) | R12,500 to R18,000 |
| Adventure smartwatch (Garmin fēnix) | R19,000 to R25,000 |

Where the deals are
Fashion watches are on promotion almost constantly, so their percentages mean little, and smartwatches tend to drop when the next generation launches. For the rest, our guide on how to spot a real watch discount covers the checks, from the reference number to grey imports.
Jewellery and watch deals on THE REAL DEAL are ranked by REALRANK™, which reads the discount, the rand saving, how the price compares to other shops, the brand, how recently the price dropped and stock.
Before you pay
Match the reference number across shops. Buy from an authorised dealer if the international warranty matters. Check the movement, crystal and water resistance on the spec sheet. Ask about returns before a bracelet is sized. Keep the box, papers and invoice together for the warranty, the resale value and the Consumer Protection Act's six-month defect right.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good first watch to buy?
A Citizen Eco-Drive, a Seiko 5 Sports or a Tissot quartz model gives you a proper watch from an established watchmaker without a big spend.
Smartwatch or traditional watch?
A smartwatch for fitness tracking and notifications, accepting charging and yearly updates. A traditional watch for something that lasts for years. Many people own both.
Are fashion brand watches worth it?
If you love the design, they can be. At the same price, a watchmaker's brand usually offers a better movement and better resale value.
What size watch should I buy as a gift?
Check what they wear now. 36 to 40 mm is classic; 40 to 44 mm is larger. A leather or rubber strap avoids the need for sizing.
