Power tool deals in South Africa: is the bundle worth it?
You came in for a drill and you're leaving with a kit. The sums behind power tool deals in South Africa: bundles, combo kits, bulk packs and batteries.
You came in for a drill. You're leaving with a drill, two batteries, a charger, a bag and a quiet feeling you've been outmanoeuvred, because the kit cost less than you expected and more than you planned. That's the hardware aisle. Nothing is priced alone and everything is priced against something.
This is the guide to the sums behind the specials: the kit versus the bare tool, the combo against six full prices, the bulk pack and its per-unit price, and the one clearance you should walk past. With the arithmetic done on a drill, because that's where most people start.
Price the battery, not the drill
Say a cordless drill is R1,400 as a bare tool, no battery, no charger. The kit with two batteries and a charger is R2,900. That looks like R1,500 for accessories until you price them alone. A battery on its own is around R900 and a charger R600, so bought separately the kit's contents come to R3,800. The kit saves you R900 on day one.
Now the sum that matters more. Every cordless tool that brand sells runs on those batteries, so an angle grinder later costs R1,100 bare instead of R2,300 on another brand with its own battery. The first kit sets the price of every tool after it. Our guide to cordless platforms and what to buy first covers how to choose one.
The power tool deals you'll see, and what each is worth
Bare tool or kit
If you already own the platform, buy the bare tool. The battery in the kit is one you already have, and bare tools go on special more quietly. If you don't, buy the kit with two batteries, because one battery means stopping to charge halfway through the job. Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, Ryobi and Milwaukee all sell both ways, and the bare-tool price is the one to compare between shops.
The combo kit against six full prices
A drill, an impact driver, a grinder, a light, two batteries and a bag, "worth" the sum of six individual prices. The sum is real and the question is whether you'd have bought the light. Price the two tools you wanted, with batteries, at two shops. If the combo is within 20 percent of that, the extra tools are close to free. If it only wins by counting the torch at full price, buy the two tools.
The bulk pack and the per-unit price
Screws, wall plugs, tiles, paint. The 500-pack is usually cheaper per screw than the 100-pack, and worthless if you need 60 and have nowhere to put the rest. Do the per-unit sum (price divided by count, litre or square metre), then ask how many you'll use this year. Tiles are the exception where 10 percent extra is right, for breakages and the cut at the edge. Measure twice for tinted paint, because at the time of review at least one big chain won't take it back once it's mixed.
The discontinued battery clearance
A full kit at 50 or 60 percent off, on a battery platform the shop is dropping. The price is real and this is the one to walk past unless you only ever want this one tool. A platform nobody stocks means no second tool, no replacement battery in three years, and a drill that becomes a doorstop when the cells die. Check the shop still sells spare batteries on it before you get excited.
The straight markdown
A current tool, kit or bare, at a lower price with full stock. Hardware does this around Black Friday for power tools, at the end of summer for garden tools, and whenever a brand refreshes a range. It's the pattern with the least to think about. If it's on your platform and you'd have bought it anyway, this is the day.
Where REALRANK™ comes in
The battery sum is easy on one drill. It's tedious across grinders, sanders, paint and garden tools at three hardware chains. REALRANK™ does the price check on live DIY and hardware deals from the shops we track, and reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.
With tools, look at the rand figure before the percentage. Fifteen percent off a mitre saw puts more back in your pocket than 40 percent off a pack of drill bits.
What a strong score looks like
These are the tool, paint, hardware and garden deals scoring 9.0 and above. A score reads the price, not your battery platform, so check the voltage and brand match what's in your garage before you add a bare tool to the basket.
When hardware is cheapest in South Africa
Observations, not rules. Black Friday is real for power tools, and it's also the week the combo kit does most of its work, so price the tools you wanted before you read the kit price. Garden tools come down at the end of summer, around March. Paint goes on special before spring. Brand range refreshes drop last year's kits whenever they happen, which is the quiet way to buy a platform.
Before you pay
Decide the platform first. Price the bare tool at two shops, then the kit. Do the per-unit sum on anything in a pack.
Hardware returns are short and full of exclusions. At the time of review the window ran from 14 days at one national chain to six months at another, and the shorter one refused tinted paint and cut-to-size boards. Read the line before you pay.
A faulty tool goes back within six months under the Consumer Protection Act. Many power tool brands add a warranty of their own, claimed through the brand, so check the length on the brand's South African site. Trade pricing and collection rules are in our playbook on buying tools and hardware online.

Frequently asked questions
Is a drill combo kit worth it?
If you'd have bought two or more of the tools anyway and you don't own a battery platform yet, usually yes. Price the tools you wanted on their own first. If the kit only wins by counting the torch, buy the tools.
Should I buy the bare tool or the kit?
If you already own the platform, buy the bare tool. Starting from nothing, buy the kit with two batteries. The batteries are the expensive part either way.
Is a discontinued power tool brand a good deal?
Only if this is the only tool you'll ever want on it. Once a platform is gone, so are replacement batteries and the next tool, and the saving disappears with them.
Can I return tools and paint?
Unused tools in their packaging, usually yes within the shop's window. Tinted paint and cut-to-size materials, usually no. A faulty tool goes back under the Consumer Protection Act within six months.
