Headphones and earbuds: noise cancelling, fit and price

Earbuds or over-ears? When noise cancelling is worth paying for, why fit matters more than specs, and what headphones and earbuds cost in South Africa.

Open-plan office on a Monday. Someone's on a call, someone's microwaving fish, and the printer is having a breakdown. Or it's the taxi rank, the gym, the 11-hour flight. Same need every time: some quiet and some music, without the world getting in.

Headphones and earbuds range from a few hundred rand to over ten thousand. The jump in price buys real differences in how much noise they block and how they sound. Below: the main types, when noise cancelling earns its price, why fit matters so much, and what to pay.

What to decide first

Where will you use them most? Office, commute, gym, flights or home.

Do you need noise cancelling? Noisy offices, transport and flights say yes; quiet homes and gym sessions say maybe not.

Which phone do you use? Some features (easy pairing, spatial audio, the best codecs) work best within the same brand.

How long do you wear them? All day makes comfort and battery life matter most.

Everyday earbuds

Small, light and always in your pocket. Good everyday earbuds give clear sound, a decent battery and a reliable connection, and many now include basic noise cancelling. Look for several ear-tip sizes in the box and an app to adjust the sound. Samsung, JBL, Honor and JLab all make well-priced options.

Noise-cancelling over-ear headphones

The best noise cancelling and the most comfortable for long sessions, with bigger batteries and fuller sound. The flagships from Sony, Bose and Apple are excellent on flights and in open-plan offices. Mid-range models from JBL, Sony and others now do a good job for a fraction of the price. They're bulkier to carry and warm in a South African summer, so they're best for desks and travel.

Sport and open-ear

Sport earbuds have ear hooks or wing tips that stay put, plus sweat and water resistance. Open-ear and bone-conduction headphones leave your ears open, so you can hear traffic on a run or ride, which is safer on the road. They won't cancel noise, and that's the point.

Fit changes everything

An earbud that doesn't seal lets noise in and bass out, so noise cancelling and sound quality both suffer. Try every ear-tip size in the box, and use the fit test in the app if there is one. Some people find foam tips seal better. For over-ears, check the clamp and the weight, and how the ear cups sit around (not on) your ears, especially if you wear glasses.

Battery life is the other number to read carefully. The figure on the box is often quoted with noise cancelling switched off, so expect fewer hours with it on. If you fly long-haul or forget to charge, look at the figure with noise cancelling on, and check whether the case gives a quick top-up.

Where the deals are

Headphones and earbuds go on promotion often, especially when a new generation launches and the previous one is cleared, and over Black Friday. Last year's flagship at a real markdown can be better value than this year's mid-range. Compare the exact model at another shop before you trust the percentage, and our guide to launch cycles and old stock shows how to read the markdown.

The Electronics Shop ranks live electronics deals from the shops we track by REALRANK™. It reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.

Before you pay

Check the model generation, because names repeat across years. Buy from established shops, since counterfeit earbuds from big brands are common online. Most shops won't take back opened earbuds for hygiene reasons unless they're faulty, so check the return terms. Keep the invoice for the warranty and the Consumer Protection Act's six-month defect right. Our playbook on warranties, grey imports and returns has the detail.

Frequently asked questions

Earbuds or over-ear headphones?

Earbuds for commuting, gym and carrying everywhere. Over-ears for flights, long work sessions and the strongest noise cancelling.

Is noise cancelling worth it?

If you work in open-plan spaces, commute on noisy transport or fly often, yes. In quiet homes, it matters less.

Why don't my earbuds cancel noise well?

Usually the fit. Try every ear-tip size, use the app's fit test if there is one, or try foam tips.

Are cheap earbuds any good?

Many are good for everyday use and the gym. You pay more for stronger noise cancelling, better sound and better apps.
