How REALRANK™ Works — Verifying Deals in South Africa
How REALRANK™ scores and verifies South African deals: what gets checked, what the score means, and what verification can and cannot promise.
How REALRANK™ Works: What It Takes to Verify a Deal
Every sale banner in South Africa makes the same claim: was this, now that, save big. The banner never tells you whether the "was" price was real.
That gap is where shoppers lose money, and it is the exact problem REALRANK™ was built to solve. This article explains what the engine checks, what the score on every deal actually means, and — just as importantly — what verification can and cannot promise you.
The problem with taking discounts at face value
A discount is a comparison between two numbers: the price now, and the price before. Retail promotions only work if you trust the second number. There are well-documented reasons not to.
Local media investigations and consumer research have repeatedly found the same pattern in South African retail: prices creep up in the weeks before a big sale, then get "marked down" to roughly where they started. The percentage on the banner is technically accurate against the inflated number and practically meaningless against reality. We cover that whole pattern in not all deals are real.
Checking one deal manually is doable. You compare the price across a few retailers, look at what the item has sold for recently, and judge whether the saving is genuine. It takes ten to twenty minutes if you know what you are doing. Nobody does that for every purchase, which is why fake discounts keep working.
REALRANK™ does that checking work continuously, across every deal on The Real Deal, before you ever see it.
What REALRANK™ is
REALRANK™ is the proprietary scoring engine behind The Real Deal. Every deal that reaches the platform is evaluated against a set of weighted factors and given a score. That score decides where the deal ranks: on the Board, in its category, everywhere on the platform.
Two things follow from that, and both matter.
First, ranking is earned. The deals at the top are there because they scored highest on genuine value. Position on The Real Deal cannot be bought. Sponsored placements exist on the platform, but they are separate, marked slots and are never sold into the ranking.
Second, weak deals sink. A discount built on an inflated original price does not score the way its banner suggests it should, so it does not surface the way its retailer might hope. The engine is not there to make every deal look good. It is there to put the genuinely good ones where you can see them.
What the engine checks
REALRANK™ weighs several factors for every deal. The exact weightings are ours, but the factors themselves are worth understanding, because they are the same things a careful shopper would check by hand.
Discount depth: with a cap against inflation
How deep is the discount, really? The engine measures the percentage saving, and critically, that measurement is capped and checked so that artificially inflated "was" prices cannot buy a deal a better score. A 70% banner built on a fake original price does not get treated like a genuine 70%.
Absolute savings
Percentages mislead on their own. Forty percent off a R300 item saves you R120; forty percent off a R30,000 item saves you R12,000. REALRANK™ scores the actual rand amount you keep, so high-value savings are recognised as what they are.
Price competitiveness
The current price is judged against the item's original price benchmark: what it genuinely sells for, not just what today's label claims it used to cost. This is the factor that separates a real markdown from a relabelled one.
Brand weight
The Real Deal is built around brands people actually want. A genuine discount on a brand shoppers actively follow carries more weight than the same percentage on something nobody was looking for. This keeps the top of the Board relevant, not just technically discounted.
Freshness
Deals age. A discount that has been running for weeks is not the same opportunity as one that dropped this morning, so newer deals score higher and a deal's freshness decays over time. This keeps the Board live rather than stale.
Stock availability
A deal you cannot buy is not a deal. Out-of-stock items are penalised so the ranking reflects what you can actually act on.
What you see on a deal page
All of this lands on the deal page as a small set of numbers and marks worth learning to read.
The REALRANK™ score, out of 100, is the summary judgement: the higher the score, the stronger the deal ranked across everything above. On deal cards you will see it as a TD score out of ten; it is the same measure.
Alongside the score sit the discount percentage, the rand amount you save, and the deal's freshness. The "why this deal is ranked" panel shows the reasoning rather than asking you to take the score on faith.
A verified mark on a deal means the discount passed checking: that it is a genuine reduction, not an inflated markdown dressed up as one. That word is doing real work on this platform. It is the difference between a deal that was inspected and a banner that was merely published.
What verification does not mean
Honesty about limits is part of the method, so here are ours.
Verification is a check at a point in time. Prices change, promotions end, and stock sells out, sometimes between our most recent check and your click. The retailer's live page is always the final word on price and availability, which is one of the reasons every purchase happens there, not here.
A high score means the deal is strong on genuine value. It does not mean the product is right for you. REALRANK™ verifies the discount; it does not know whether you need a dive watch or whether those trail shoes fit your feet. The score answers "is this price real and is it good". The buying decision stays yours.
And no engine sees everything. The Real Deal works from a hand-picked retailer set rather than scraping the whole internet, so there will be deals in the world that are not on the platform. We consider that a feature: a deal from a store we would not send you to is not worth ranking. The thinking behind that is covered in what The Real Deal is.
Why ranking beats scrolling
The deeper point of REALRANK™ is not any single verification. It is comparison at scale.
Checking whether one discount is real tells you about one discount. Scoring every deal on the platform by the same standard tells you something more useful: which of today's thousands of genuine discounts are actually the best ones. That is the difference between a fact-check and a ranking, and the ranking is what saves you the hours.
It also changes the incentive structure quietly. On a platform where position is earned on genuine value, the inflate-then-discount trick stops paying. Retailers with real markdowns rise; manufactured percentages do not.
How to use this as a shopper
The practical habit is simple. When you are about to buy something at a "sale" price anywhere, check whether the item — or its category — is on The Real Deal first. If the deal is there with a strong REALRANK™ score, you have your answer. If the platform shows meaningfully better verified deals in the same category, you have a better answer.
If you want to check prices manually as well, we have written up the full method in how to check a price before you buy. It is the hand-done version of what the engine automates.
Final word
REALRANK™ exists because the number on a sale banner is a claim, not a fact. The engine checks the claim (discount depth against inflation, real rand savings, price against genuine benchmarks, freshness, stock) and turns thousands of checked deals into one ranked view.
You do not have to take any single banner's word for anything. Before you buy, Check The Deal.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good REALRANK™ score?
Scores run out of 100, and higher means the deal ranked stronger across genuine discount depth, rand savings, price competitiveness, freshness and stock. The score is relative by design. The most useful reading is a deal's position against everything else live on the Board today.
Does a high REALRANK™ score mean the product is good?
It means the deal is strong: the discount is genuine and the value is real. Whether the product suits you is still your call; the engine verifies prices, not preferences.
What does the verified mark on a deal mean?
That the discount passed checking as a genuine reduction rather than an inflated markdown. It is a statement about the price claim, made before you saw the deal.
Why did a deal disappear from the Board?
Deals age, stock sells out and retailers end promotions. The ranking rewards freshness and availability, so a deal that expires or sells through falls away rather than lingering.
Can retailers see or influence their scores?
The scoring factors are public at the level described in this article; the weightings and the scores themselves are ours. No retailer or brand can buy, adjust or negotiate a REALRANK™ score.
