Online clothing size guide for South Africa
An online clothing size guide for South Africa: measure yourself once, read any size chart, use fit tools and reviews, and order clothes that fit first time.
You're a medium in one shop's T-shirts and a large in another's. Your jeans say 34 but fit like a 32. The shoes are a UK 9, except the pair that's a UK 9 and feels like an 8. It's the same body every time. The labels just don't agree.
Online, there's no fitting room, so the size label carries more weight than it deserves. The fix takes ten minutes and a tape measure, and it works on every shop. Below: measuring yourself, reading a size chart, fit tools and reviews, and what to check before you pay.
What to decide first
Decide how you like things to fit: close, regular or relaxed. Find one item you own that fits perfectly in each category you buy (a T-shirt, jeans, a dress, shoes) and keep it as your reference. And check whether the shop offers free returns, because that changes how much risk you can take on a new brand.
Measure yourself once
Use a soft tape, over light clothing, standing relaxed. Chest or bust: around the fullest part, tape level under the arms. Waist: around your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Hips: around the fullest part of the hips and bum. Inside leg: from the crotch to the floor, without shoes. Foot length: stand on a sheet of paper, mark heel and longest toe, and measure the gap. Note the numbers in centimetres and update them once a year.
Tops, shirts and jackets
Compare your chest or bust measurement with the brand's chart, then check the fit description: slim, regular, relaxed or oversized. An oversized fit in your usual size will look bigger on purpose. For shirts, shoulder width matters more than anything else and can't be altered, so read the shoulder measurement if the chart shows it.
Jeans and trousers
Waist and inside leg decide it, but the cut decides how it feels: skinny, slim, straight, relaxed. Waist numbers on jeans are often a little generous or a little stingy depending on the brand, so measure a pair you love flat across the waistband and compare it with the chart. Stretch fabric gives more room; rigid denim gives none, so size up if you're between sizes in rigid jeans.
Dresses and fitted pieces
Use the largest of your bust, waist and hip measurements against the chart, because a fitted piece is easier to take in than let out. Check the fabric: stretch knits forgive, woven fabrics don't. Length matters too, so look for the garment length and the model's height in the description.
Shoes
South African shops mostly use UK sizes, but international brands also show EU and US sizes, and the conversions aren't identical across brands. Your foot length in centimetres is the most reliable number; compare it with the brand's chart. Running and sports shoes often run small, and many people go up a half size. Check whether the shoe is listed as narrow, regular or wide.
Online clothing size guides, fit tools and reviews
Many shops show a size guide on each product page, and some add a fit tool. At the time of review, Bash offers Fit Finder on selected tops, bottoms and shoes. It recommends a size from your height and weight, sometimes asks about fit preference, and lets you add a brand you already wear. It says plainly that the recommendation is guidance, not a guarantee.
Reviews help just as much. "Runs small", "size up" or "long in the arms" from someone who's worn it tells you more than the label.
Where the deals are
Fashion sales clear stock size by size, and the common sizes go first. A big discount where only one size is left isn't much use if it's not yours, so filter by your size before you look at percentages. Our guide to what a real fashion discount looks like helps you judge the percentage once your size is there.
The fashion deals on THE REAL DEAL are ranked by REALRANK™, which reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.
Before you pay
Read the returns policy for that item, since final-sale, swimwear and underwear rules are often stricter. Check whether returns are free or cost a courier fee. Online orders carry a seven-day cooling-off right under the ECT Act, but keep tags on and packaging intact until you're sure. If you're between sizes on a new brand and returns are free, some people order both and return one, so check the policy first. Our playbook on fashion delivery and returns compares the shops' terms.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my clothing size online?
Measure your chest or bust, waist, hips and inside leg, then compare the numbers with the brand's own size chart rather than relying on S, M or L.
Why are sizes different between brands?
There's no single standard, and brands design for different fits and body shapes. A medium in one brand can be a small or a large in another.
What shoe size system does South Africa use?
Mostly UK sizes, with EU and US shown by international brands. Your foot length in centimetres is the most reliable comparison.
Should I size up or down if I'm between sizes?
For fitted or rigid fabrics, size up. For stretch fabrics or oversized fits, your usual size or smaller often works. Reviews help decide.
Where are the best fashion deals in my size?
THE REAL DEAL ranks live fashion deals from the shops we track by REALRANK™, and stock is one of its six signals. Check your size on the shop's page.
