How to choose a tent and sleeping bag: 3 specs that matter

How to choose a tent and sleeping bag in South Africa: the three specs that matter (waterproof rating, temperature rating, packed weight) and price bands.

It's 2am in the Drakensberg. The rain started at midnight, and a slow drip has found its way onto your pillow. You're also cold, which surprises you, because the sleeping bag said "3 seasons" on the bag and it's only April. Somewhere in the tent next door, someone is snoring happily under a much older, much heavier sleeping bag.

Camping gear is sold on features, but three numbers on the label decide whether you sleep. This guide covers what each one means, what to look for depending on how you camp, and what to pay for tents and sleeping bags in South Africa.

Before you choose a tent and sleeping bag

How will you camp? Car camping at a site, overlanding with a rooftop tent, or hiking with everything on your back. It changes every spec.

When and where? Summer in the Kruger is a different trip from winter in the Cederberg or the Berg.

How many people? Tents are rated by sleepers, snugly. Add one for comfort and gear.

Spec 1: waterproof rating

Tents and flysheets list a hydrostatic head in millimetres: the column of water the fabric holds back before it leaks. Around 1,500 mm handles light rain, 2,000 to 3,000 mm handles proper storms, and higher numbers are for serious mountain weather. Taped seams, a full-length flysheet and a groundsheet that comes up the sides matter as much as the number. For summer storms on the Highveld or mountain weather, don't go below about 2,000 mm.

Spec 2: temperature rating

Many sleeping bags show more than one temperature. The comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which a standard (female) sleeper stays comfortable lying relaxed. The limit rating is the lowest at which a standard (male) sleeper gets through the night curled up. The extreme figure, where shown, is a survival number. Buy on the comfort rating, a few degrees below the coldest night you expect. And remember that a good sleeping mat matters as much as the bag, because the cold ground takes heat from below.

Spec 3: packed weight and size

For car camping, weight barely matters, and a heavier, roomier tent and bag are often more comfortable and cheaper. For hiking, you carry every gram up every hill. Down sleeping bags cost more because they're lighter and pack smaller for the same warmth. Good hiking tents are priced for low weight too.

Family and car-camping tents

Dome tents are affordable, quick to pitch and fine for most campsites. Frame and canvas tents are bigger, tougher and cooler in summer, at a higher price. Air tents (inflatable beams) pitch fast and are pricey. Look for headroom, separate rooms if you need them, a vestibule for gear, and a waterproof rating that suits the season.

Hiking tents

Light, compact and built to shed wind and rain on exposed ground. Three-season tents suit most South African hiking; four-season tents add strength for winter mountains. Check the packed weight per person and how easy it is to pitch in the wind.

Sleeping bags

Synthetic fill is cheaper, handles damp better and dries faster. Down is lighter, packs smaller and is warmer for its weight, at a higher price, and needs to be kept dry. Mummy shapes are warmer; rectangular bags give more room for car camping. For most South African camping outside winter, a synthetic bag with a comfort rating near freezing covers a lot of trips.

Where the deals are

Camping gear is seasonal. Shops promote tents and summer gear before the December holidays; sleeping bags and winter gear before the cold months, with clearance after each season. Our guide to when outdoor gear prices drop goes through the calendar. Last season's colour of a good tent or bag is usually the same product for less.

Outdoor and camping deals on THE REAL DEAL are ranked by REALRANK™, which reads six signals: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.

Before you pay

Check the waterproof rating and seam taping on the spec sheet, the comfort temperature on the sleeping bag rather than the limit, and the packed weight if you'll carry it. Pitch a new tent at home before the trip, so missing parts show up while the shop can still help. Keep the packaging, and pack it away carefully if you might return it. Our playbook on outdoor gear returns and warranty claims covers the rest. Keep the invoice for the warranty and the Consumer Protection Act's six-month defect right.

Frequently asked questions

What waterproof rating do I need for a tent?

Around 2,000 to 3,000 mm handles proper storms. About 1,500 mm suits light rain only. Taped seams matter as much as the number.

What do sleeping bag temperature ratings mean?

The comfort rating is where a standard sleeper lies relaxed and comfortable; the limit rating is where a standard sleeper gets through the night curled up. Buy on the comfort rating.

Is a down sleeping bag worth it?

For hiking and cold nights, often yes, because it's lighter and packs smaller. For car camping, synthetic is cheaper and handles damp better.

What size tent should I buy?

Add one person to the number who'll sleep in it, for room and gear. For families, look at headroom and separate rooms too.
