Toy deals in South Africa: is the discount real?

The set on your kid's list is "30 percent off" at one shop and that price everywhere else. How to read toy deals in South Africa, and the set-number check.

The building set at the top of your kid's list is "30 percent off" at one shop. You feel good about that for roughly as long as it takes to open a second tab, where the same set is that exact price with no sale sticker at all. Then a third tab, where it's R50 less.

Toys are priced against a recommended figure that comes from the brand or its local distributor and is often not what shops charge. This is the guide to reading a toy sale, with the sum done on that set.

The set number beats the sticker

Say the set is listed at "was R1,300, now R900, save 30 percent". Building sets carry a set number on the box and in the listing. Paste it into two other shops. If both have it at R900 with no sale, you've found the price, not a discount. If one has it at R850, you've found the shop. If both have it at R1,200, the 30 percent is real and you should buy it before the shop notices.

That's the whole method for toys, and it works because set numbers are exact in a way product names aren't. "Pirate ship" can be four products. The set number is one.

The toy deals you'll see, and what each one means

The recommended price nobody paid

The brand sets a recommended price and the shops mostly ignore it, so "35 percent off" can be what everyone charges all year. The advertising code asks retailers to hold evidence of any reduction they advertise and says shoppers shouldn't be led to overestimate what something's worth. The set number is your evidence. If the "sale" price is the market price, the sticker is decoration.

The exclusive you can't compare

A set, a colour or a bundle sold at one shop only, so the set-number trick returns nothing. Sometimes a real exclusive, sometimes a standard set with one extra figure and a different number. Compare the nearest standard set and ask whether the difference is worth the gap. Most kids won't notice the extra figure. Most.

The multi-buy on the small stuff

Three-for-two on craft kits, buy-two-get-one on the pocket-money shelf. Fine for party packs and stocking fillers, where you wanted several anyway. Not a saving if you're adding a third thing to qualify, and the cheapest item is usually the free one. Price per item, then ask whether the third one was on the list.

The straight markdown

A current set, below the price at two other shops, with stock. It happens when a range refreshes and the old version of a long-running set drops. It also shows up on Black Friday for big-ticket ride-ons and battery toys, and in January. This is the one worth hurrying for, because toy stock is thin and a good set at a good price often doesn't last.

Where REALRANK™ comes in

Pasting one set number into two tabs takes a minute. Doing it for a whole birthday list, plus the scooter and the baby monitor, takes an evening. REALRANK™ does the price check on live toy and baby deals from the shops we track, and reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.

Whether the set suits the child's age is still your call.

What a strong score looks like

Here are the babies and toys deals scoring 9.0 and above, which can include prams and car seats as well as toys. If one of those turns up, read our guide to pram and car seat safety standards before the price does the deciding.

When toys are cheapest in South Africa

Observations, not rules. Toy prices tend to be at their highest in the six weeks before Christmas and at their lowest in the first weeks of January, when the shops clear what didn't sell. If a birthday falls in February, January is the month to buy. If the present is for Christmas, do the set-number check in December, because that's when prices can differ most between shops.

Before you pay

Check the set number at two other shops. Check the age grading matches the child, not the price.

Then read the returns line, because toys go back on condition. At the time of review one national toy chain wanted them boxed, undamaged and with the slip, and paid back sale items at the price you paid. Ride-ons and electric scooters carried a six-month warranty against manufacturing defects.

A national online retailer gives 30 days on unwanted items that are unused and in their original packaging, and six months for a defect, in line with the Consumer Protection Act. Section 23 of the Act also says that where two prices are shown on the same item, you pay the lower one. Recalls, age grading and returns are covered in more depth in our playbook on buying baby gear and toys online.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a toy discount is real?

Find the set number on the box or listing and price that exact set at two other shops. If they match the "sale" price without a sale, the discount is the price. If they're higher, it's real.

When are toys cheapest in South Africa?

January, when the shops clear what didn't sell over Christmas, and when a long-running set gets a new version. The six weeks before Christmas are usually the most expensive.

Is Black Friday good for toys?

For ride-ons, big-ticket sets and anything with a battery, usually. For the rest of the aisle, January is better and the set-number check matters more than the week.

Can I return a toy once it's opened?

For change of mind, usually not. In original packaging with the receipt, usually yes within the shop's window. A faulty toy goes back under the Consumer Protection Act within six months.
