Is a Weber worth it? Weber vs other braais in SA

Is a Weber braai worth the extra? What you pay for the name on kettle and gas braais, where cheaper brands match it, and where they don't, in South Africa.

Your neighbour's Weber is older than his car. The enamel's faded, the legs have been replaced once, and it still roasts a leg of lamb on a Sunday like it did the day he bought it. Across the road, a cheaper kettle from two summers ago is already showing rust at the bottom.

That's the case for Weber, and it's a fair one. It's not the full story, though. Not everyone needs a braai that lasts twenty years, and some alternatives are very good. Below: what the name buys, where cheaper brands match it and where they fall short.

What to decide first

How often do you braai, and how long do you want this one to last? A braai used every weekend for a decade justifies more than one used at Christmas. Then check where it'll live: under cover, or out in the sea air in Durban or on the Cape coast, where enamel and steel quality matter much more. If you're still choosing between charcoal and gas, start with kettle, gas or kamado first.

What the name buys on a kettle

Enamel and steel. A thicker porcelain enamel finish on the bowl and lid resists rust and heat for much longer, which matters most at the coast.

Fit and vents. A lid that seals well and vents that actually control the airflow are what make roasting and smoking work. Cheaper kettles often leak air, which makes the temperature hard to hold.

Ash handling. A proper ash catcher and sweep system makes clean-up quick and keeps the bowl drier.

Warranty and parts. Established brands tend to offer longer warranties on the bowl and lid, and grids, legs and handles stay available for years. Check the warranty term on each brand's own page before you compare prices.

What the name buys on gas

On gas braais, the premium buys heavier burners, better heat spread across the grill, sturdier carts and long burner warranties. The gap in price between Weber and the local alternatives is much wider here than on kettles, often several thousand rand for a similar number of burners. For a family that braais on gas a few times a month, a solid local brand covers that well.

Is a Weber braai worth it? The verdict

Buy Weber if you braai often, want one braai for many years, live at the coast, or care about roasting and smoking with the lid on. The kettle is the strongest case, because the price gap is smallest and the build difference is clearest.

The rest: the verdict

Buy a well-reviewed alternative if you braai occasionally, need a braai for a flat or holiday house, or want the money for a better gas braai or a cover and tools (our list of braai accessories worth the money helps there). Cadac, Megamaster and Braaimaxx all have strong followings in South Africa, and their better models are well made. Look for thicker steel, a good lid seal and local spare parts.

Where the deals are

Weber goes on special too, sometimes by 20 to 30 percent, so compare the same model at another shop before you trust the percentage. The other brands are discounted as well, sometimes against a "was" price that's been the "was" price for a long time. Heritage Day, Black Friday and the run-up to December are when both are promoted hardest.

The Braai Shop ranks live braai deals from the shops we track by REALRANK™, which reads the discount, the rand saving, how the price compares to other shops, the brand, how recently the price dropped and stock.

Before you pay

Compare like with like: the same size, the same number of burners, and what's in the box. A kettle without a lid thermometer or ash catcher isn't the same braai as one with. Check that spare grids and parts are sold locally. Keep the invoice for the warranty and for the Consumer Protection Act's six-month defect right.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Weber kettle worth the extra money?

If you braai often and want it to last for years, usually yes. The enamel, lid fit, vents and parts availability are where the money goes.

Is a Weber gas braai worth it over a Cadac?

Only if you braai on gas often. The price gap on gas is wide, and Cadac and other local brands cover weekend braaiing well for much less.

Why do cheap kettle braais rust?

Thinner steel and thinner enamel, plus coastal air and rain. A cover and a dry ash catcher help any kettle last longer.

Do Weber braais go on sale?

Yes, sometimes by 20 to 30 percent. Compare the same model at another shop before you trust the percentage, because the was price isn't always what it sold for.
