When does golf gear go on sale in South Africa?

The new driver lands and last season's drops. When golf gear really goes on sale in South Africa, which golf deals are real, and what holds its price.

The new driver arrives in the shop with a launch event, a demo day and a price that makes you swallow. Two racks over, last season's version of the same driver, which you'd have happily bought a year ago, has quietly come down. Same shop, same brand, nearly the same club. That rack is where golf's real deals live.

South Africa plays golf all year, so there's no end-of-season sale the way there is for winter coats or swimwear. Prices move on other things. This guide covers what makes golf gear cheaper, which deals are real, and which items barely move, so you know when a markdown is worth acting on.

When golf gear goes on sale: the launch calendar

The big club brands refresh their drivers and irons on a cycle of roughly one to two years, and most launch early in the calendar year, with others spread through it. When the new model lands, the shops need the space, and they mark the outgoing model down.

The useful part: the gap in performance between one generation and the next is usually small, and the gap in price can be large. A round example: a driver at R12,000 at launch might sit at around R8,000 once its replacement arrives. Whether you'd notice the difference on the course is a question for a launch monitor, not the marketing. Our guide to choosing irons and a driver for your handicap covers what to look for once you're there.

Multi-buys on balls and gloves

Balls and gloves are almost always on some kind of multi-buy, from four dozen for the price of three to two gloves for a set price. Work it out per ball or per glove, because a free sleeve on a dozen that went up for the promotion isn't a saving at all. Our guide to which golf ball suits your game has the per-ball maths.

Black Friday, Father's Day and year-end

Golf shops join the big promotional weekends like everyone else. Father's Day in June and the run-up to December are when gift-sized golf gear goes on promotion: balls, gloves, bags, rangefinders and accessories. The bigger clubs tend to follow the launch calendar instead. On these weekends, the question is the same as always: was this the normal price before the sale, or was it priced up for it?

Pre-owned

The specialist golf shops run busy pre-owned departments, and it's the quietest bargain in golf. Hybrids, fairway woods and irons last for years, and a club that's two generations old can cost a fraction of a new one. Look for shops that offer a play guarantee, and check the shaft flex and the grip before you pay.

What holds its price

Some golf gear barely moves. A driver or iron set in its first few months, a premium putter, a box of tour balls or a rangefinder from one of the bigger names gets smaller, rarer discounts. So when one of them shows a big percentage off, slow down. Look for the model year, find out if the club has had a previous owner, and see what another golf shop asks.

Then look at the old price. The Advertising Regulatory Board's code limits how long a shop can run a single reduction against a former price. A golf "was" price that hasn't moved in months is one to question.

How REALRANK™ reads a golf deal

REALRANK™ reads six things about each live golf deal: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes. The score tells you whether the price is good; the model year and the shaft spec tell you whether the club is right for you.

Before you pay

Check the model year in the listing, because last season's and this season's can share a name. Confirm whether it's new or pre-owned, and what the returns policy is for each, because they're often different. New clubs carry the Consumer Protection Act's six-month defect warranty whatever the price, and that applies to sale clubs too.

Frequently asked questions

When do golf clubs go on sale in South Africa?

Mostly when a new model launches and the outgoing one is marked down. Black Friday, Father's Day and year-end promotions mostly cover balls, gloves and accessories.

Is last season's driver worth buying?

Often yes. The performance gap between generations is usually small, and the price gap can be large. A fitting tells you whether it suits you.

Are golf ball multi-buys real deals?

Sometimes. Work out the price per ball and compare it with the same ball elsewhere on a normal week.

What golf gear holds its price?

New-season drivers and irons, premium putters, tour balls and rangefinders from the bigger names. A big discount on these deserves a second look.
