Real sports deal or end-of-season clearance?
The shoes you wanted are half price and there's one size left. How to read sports deals in South Africa, when to buy anyway, and the checks that matter.
You've found the running shoes you wanted at half price. You've already pictured the first run in them. Then you open the size selector. One size left, and it's a 6. Of course it is.
Sports gear in South Africa goes on special often and deeply, which is exactly why the number on the sticker tells you so little. This is the guide to reading what's behind it, so the next time your size is there you know whether to move.
Three checks before you get excited
Is your size there, and is it the right size? Running shoes usually want a half size up from your street shoe. Trail shoes often fit snugger. If the only size left is the one you'd normally squeeze into, that's not your size.
What does the exact same model cost elsewhere? Same model, same version, same colour if you can. Open the brand's own store and one other shop. If both are at the "sale" price without calling it a sale, the discount is just the price.
Can it go back once you've tried it? Most shops will take back unworn shoes with the ticket on within 30 days, and almost none will take them back once they've touched tar. Try them indoors first, on a clean floor, and keep the box.
What a sports deal's discount is telling you
Last season's colour, most sizes still there
The most common sports deal and usually the real one. The shoe is unchanged, the colour has been replaced, and the shop wants the shelf back. 30 to 50 percent off with your size in stock is the one to buy without overthinking it.
The last size or two
60 percent or more, on whatever's left. If it's your size and your model, it's a very good day and you should buy it before someone else does. It's a narrow deal rather than a bad one: the price is real, it's just that most people reading the same page can't use it.
The sale that never ends
The padel racket with a permanent "promo" badge, measured against a higher price it only carried in its launch month. The Advertising Regulatory Board's code limits a single advertised price reduction to three months and expects the shop to prove the old price. A promo that outlasts a whole padel season is the price wearing a badge. Look the racket up at two other shops. If they charge the same, the promo price is just the price.
The bundle
Shoes plus socks plus a cap, priced against three full prices. Sometimes a saving, often not, because one item in the bundle was going to be discounted anyway. Price the shoes alone, then decide whether you wanted the cap.
The new model has just landed
When a brand drops this year's version of a long-running shoe, last year's falls hard within a few weeks while most sizes are still there. For most runners the changes between versions are an upper and a colour, so you're getting the shoe you'd have bought anyway, at a third less. If you're loyal to a model, that's when to buy two pairs.
Where REALRANK™ comes in
Size, same-model price and returns are quick on one pair of takkies. They're slow across running, gym, golf and padel kit at several shops. REALRANK™ does the price side on live sports deals from the shops we track, and reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.
Whether the shoe suits your stride is still a question for your feet.
What a strong score looks like
Below are the shoes, kit and equipment deals scoring 9.0 and above. Before you pick one, open the size selector, because a strong price on the wrong size is still the wrong shoe. Not sure which shoe your sport needs? Start with choosing sports shoes by sport, not by brand.
When sports gear is cheapest in South Africa
Observations, not rules. Apparel comes down at the end of summer around March and the end of winter around September. Shoes come down when the new model lands, which follows each brand's own calendar rather than the school holidays. Watches and anything with a battery follow the electronics calendar, so Black Friday is worth waiting for there and rarely anywhere else in the aisle.
Before you pay
Check the sizes left before you check the price. Compare the exact model at the brand store, not against the was-price.
Read the returns line on anything marked clearance, because clearance is often final. At the time of review two national chains give 30 days on unworn items with the ticket attached, and neither will take back swimwear or underwear for hygiene reasons. If a shoe turns out faulty, the Consumer Protection Act still applies whatever the sale sticker said. Our playbook on sizing and returns on worn sports gear goes shop by shop.

Frequently asked questions
Is 70 percent off ever real?
Yes, on the last sizes of a colour the shop is finished with. The price is real and the deal is narrow. If it's your size and your model, buy it.
Should I buy last year's version of a running shoe?
Usually yes, if the fit hasn't changed. Most version updates are an upper and a colour, so read the fit notes, check your size is there and buy the older one.
When is Black Friday worth waiting for in sport?
For watches, heart-rate monitors and anything with a battery, usually. For shoes and apparel, the end-of-season and new-model drops are better and come round more often.
Can I return running shoes I've worn?
If you've only tried them on indoors and they still look new, most shops will take them back within the returns window. Worn outdoors, usually only if they're faulty. Keep the box.
