Buying sports gear online in SA: sizing and returns

Buying sports gear online in South Africa? What counts as worn, returns on sale stock, getting shoe sizes right first time and how clubs get bulk prices.

The shoes arrived. You tried them in the lounge, they felt fine, and you took them for a short one round the block to be sure. Now there's tar on the sole, which means the shop won't take them back, which means they're yours whether the heel rubs or not. Everyone does this once.

Sizes are all over the place and one run outside ends the return. Not a kind mix. This is the South Africa checklist: delivery, what counts as worn, sizing, what the sale sticker changes, and how clubs and schools get the bulk price.

Delivery when buying sports gear online

The national chains quote two to four working days to the main centres and up to seven working days to regional areas. Most offer collection from a store, which also makes a size swap simpler. Specialist independents are often quick to their own city and slower to everyone else.

Returns on worn items

The norm is 30 days for unworn items in the original packaging with the ticket attached. At the time of review one national sports chain gives 30 days with the ticket on and the invoice. A national chain that owns several sports brands gives 30 days unused, in the original packaging, with the price tag attached.

Shoes are the exception that matters. Indoors on a clean floor is trying on. Outdoors is wearing. Once the outsole has touched tar or grass, most shops will take the shoe back only if it's faulty. Swimwear and underwear don't come back for hygiene reasons (one chain excludes bras from that rule). Anything customised, like a restrung racket or a printed shirt, is yours from the moment it's done.

Sizing

Use the brand's own chart and measure your foot in centimetres once. Letter sizes vary by brand too, so an M from one brand can be an L from another. For running shoes, our guide to how to choose running shoes covers fit and the half-size question, and choosing sports shoes by sport covers court, field and gym.

Sale small print

End-of-season boots and last year's running shoe are often marked final sale. That kills the change-of-mind return, not your right to return a sole that comes away. If you're between sizes on a final-sale pair, pick the size you'd rather be stuck with.

Promo codes tend to skip new-season stock, which is why the shoe you came for isn't in the sale. Read the code's exclusions first. And if you're weighing a big markdown against last season's model, our guide on telling a real sports deal from end-of-season clearance is the place to start.

Club and school pricing

Schools, clubs and teams can often get bulk pricing on kit, and it's usually not a checkout option. Ask the store's team or corporate desk for a quote, with sizes and quantities. A team discount on full-price kit in every size usually beats scrapping over the last two clearance sizes.

Your rights, whatever the sticker says

Ordered two sizes of the same takkie to see which fits? Send the loser back inside a week. That's the cooling-off right in the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act: seven days from delivery, no reason needed, and you cover the courier. Worn soles and personalised kit are where shops push back.

A sole that separates in the second week is a different story. That's a defect, and the Consumer Protection Act gives you six months from delivery to have it repaired or replaced, or to get a refund, even on final sale. A shoe that rubs because it's the wrong size isn't a defect.

Where REALRANK™ comes in

Forty percent off a running shoe sounds good until the shop down the road has it for less without the sticker.

REALRANK™ checks that half. It reads six things about each live sports deal from the shops we track: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes. Pair a strong score with the checks above and the shoes stay in the box until you're sure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I return running shoes I've worn?

Indoors on a clean floor, usually yes within the returns window. Outdoors, usually only if they're faulty. Keep the box until you're sure.

How long do sports stores take to deliver?

Two to four working days to the main centres is the common quote from the national chains, and up to seven working days to regional areas. Collecting from a store makes a size swap simpler.

Should I buy running shoes a half size up?

Often, yes. Feet swell on a run and toes need room on descents. Trail shoes usually fit snugger, so your foot doesn't slide. Check the brand's own chart and fit notes first.

How do clubs and schools get bulk pricing on sports kit?

Ask the store's team or corporate desk for a quote, listing sizes and quantities. It's usually a quote rather than a checkout option, and it's often worth more than the sale rail.

Where are the best sports deals in South Africa?

The Sports category on THE REAL DEAL ranks live sports deals by REALRANK™, and THE REAL DEAL has separate shops for running, golf, padel and cycling.
