Buying beauty products online in SA: returns and expiry
Buying beauty products online in South Africa? What happens to returns once a seal breaks, how to read expiry dates and what loyalty points are worth.
The serum arrived. You opened it, dabbed some on the back of your hand, and it's the wrong shade for your skin and the right shade for someone else's. Now you're on the returns page, and the returns page has a word for products like this one. The word is "hygiene".
Buying beauty products online in South Africa is easy. Sending them back is not, because the rules change the moment a seal breaks. This is the checklist: delivery, what can go back, what to look for on the box, what the points are worth, and the two laws under all of it.
Delivery when buying beauty products online
The biggest pharmacy chain quotes one to three working days for delivery and for click and collect. At the time of review it charges R80 for standard delivery and waives it above R650. Click and collect costs R35, waived above R350.
Collecting is worth thinking about for anything with actives in it. A parcel that sits in a hot courier van for a day isn't kind to a vitamin C serum. If the product minds the heat, collect.
Returns on opened items
The norm: unopened, sealed, in the original packaging, within 30 days, and you can return it for change of mind. Opened, you can't.
At the time of review the largest pharmacy chain won't accept returns of cosmetics, personal grooming items or pantyhose unless they're defective. A national online retailer applies the same rule to any beauty product or fragrance that's been used. Both take back a faulty product, and the pharmacy chain gives 12 months on defective goods in store. The practical rule: open the outer box, check everything you can without breaking a seal, and only then break the seal.

Expiry and batch dates
Skincare with actives, sunscreen and anything sold as "natural" has a shelf life, and a deep discount is sometimes a short date. Look for the expiry date on the box or the base of the tube. Then look for the open-jar symbol with a number of months next to it. That's how long the product lasts once opened.
Sunscreen past its date is the one that matters for your skin rather than your wallet. If a clearance tub arrives with less than six months on it, message the shop before you open it. A short date on arrival is a fair reason to send back something still sealed.
Loyalty schemes
Points are real money on a delay. At the time of review the biggest pharmacy programme earns one point for every R5 spent, with ten points worth R1. That's about 2 percent back, paid as cashback once you cross 50 points by the monthly cut-off. Points are earned on what you pay after discounts, not on gift cards, and on pharmacy purchases only on the dispensing fee.
Useful if you shop there anyway. Not a reason to pay R60 more for a R400 serum that's cheaper next door, because 2 percent back on a dearer price is still a dearer price. For the maths on three-for-two offers and gift-with-purchase, read our guide to the real price of beauty promos.
Your rights, whatever the sticker says
Changed your mind about the moisturiser before you opened it? The Electronic Communications and Transactions Act gives you seven days from delivery to cancel an online order without a reason. Shops will expect the seal to be intact.
Once it's open, that right gets thin. Shops treat opened cosmetics as goods they can't resell, and the law excludes goods that by their nature can't be returned, so expect an opened product to be refused. Faults are different. The Consumer Protection Act gives you six months to return a faulty product for repair, replacement or refund. A pump that doesn't pump, a cream that's separated in the jar, a fragrance that arrived leaking: those are defects, and the sale sticker doesn't remove them.
Before you pay, in four lines
- Match the shade against the brand's own chart, not the retailer's photo.
- Check the price at the brand store and one other pharmacy before the points banner chooses the shop.
- On arrival, check expiry, batch and seal before you open anything.
- Collect rather than deliver for anything that minds the heat.
Where REALRANK™ comes in
A double-points weekend doesn't tell you whether R400 is a fair price for that serum. REALRANK™ does the price half. It reads six things about each live beauty and wellness deal from the shops we track: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock. Pair a strong score with the checks above and the returns page stays closed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I return opened skincare or makeup?
For change of mind, no. Big retailers exclude opened cosmetics, grooming items and used fragrance for hygiene reasons. A faulty product goes back under the Consumer Protection Act within six months.
Can I return an unopened beauty product I bought online?
Usually yes, within 30 days, sealed and in its packaging. The Electronic Communications and Transactions Act also gives you seven days to cancel an online order without a reason. Shops will expect the seal to be intact.
How do I check if a beauty product is expired?
Look for the expiry date on the box or tube and the open-jar symbol with a number of months, which is the life once opened. Sunscreen and products with actives are the ones where the date matters most.
Are pharmacy loyalty points worth anything?
Around 2 percent back on what you spend at the biggest programme, paid as cashback once you cross a monthly threshold. Worth having if you shop there anyway, not a reason to pay more today.
