Beauty deals in South Africa: three-for-two and points
You went in for moisturiser and came out with three. The maths on beauty deals: multi-buys, loyalty points, gift sets and clearance, and when each pays.
You went in for moisturiser. Now there are three products in your basket, because the cheapest one is free, and you're standing in the aisle doing arithmetic you didn't plan on. The pharmacy chains built that moment on purpose. It isn't a trick. It just isn't a discount on what you came in for.
Beauty deals in South Africa come in plenty of shapes that say "special" without lowering a price. This is the short guide to what each one is worth, with the sums done, so you can decide in the aisle instead of in the car park.
Do the sum before the till does it for you
Say your usual moisturiser is R120 and the offer is three-for-two on the range. Three identical tubs come to R240, which is R80 a tub. That's a proper saving if you'll finish all three before they go off, and unopened tubs usually keep for well over a year.
Now say you only needed one. You're spending R120 more today than you meant to, to get a third tub you'd have bought in six months at full price anyway. That's fine if the cash isn't tight this month. It's just not R80 off.
And the version that catches people: you add a R45 lip balm to make up the three, because the cheapest item is the free one. So you've got a free lip balm. The two serums you wanted are still at full price.
The beauty deals you'll meet, and what each one is worth
Three-for-two and buy-two-get-one
Worth it when all three are things you use and they're roughly the same price. Worth less the more the prices differ, and worth nothing if you're adding items to qualify. Only participating products count, so check the small print before you build the basket.
Points and cashback
Good to have, slow to matter. At the time of review the biggest pharmacy programme in South Africa pays back about 2 percent of what you spend, as cashback once you cross a monthly points threshold. Shop where you shop and it adds up over a year. But "double points" on a serum that's 15 percent dearer than the shop down the road still leaves you behind, so don't let the points banner choose the shop for you.
Gift-with-purchase and the "valued at" set
Spend over a threshold and get a pouch of minis, or buy a festive set "valued at" a number nobody has ever paid. Both are fine if the full-size product inside is the one you wanted.
The sum: add up what the full-size items cost on their own. If the set is cheaper than that, buy it. If the only way the set wins is by counting the minis at full value, it doesn't win. The advertising code says shoppers shouldn't be led to overestimate what something's worth, and a "valued at" sticker is exactly where that happens.
Short-dated clearance
The festive gift sets in January, sunscreen in April, the shade that didn't sell. Often 40 to 60 percent off, and often the cheapest a full-size product will be all year. Two checks: the expiry date on the box, and the returns line, because clearance windows shrink. If it's a brand you use and the date's fine, this is a good day.
The plain markdown
A current product, at a lower price, from a shop whose everyday price was already fair. The least common one in the aisle, and the one worth hurrying for. Fragrance on Black Friday and hair tools when a new model lands are where you'll see it most.
Where REALRANK™ comes in
The per-tub sum works on one basket in one aisle. Doing it for every serum, sunscreen and fragrance across several pharmacies is a long afternoon. REALRANK™ checks live beauty and wellness deals from the shops we track, and reads six things: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock across sizes.
Whether you'll finish three tubs before they turn is still your call.
What a strong score looks like
Here are the skincare, fragrance, hair and wellness deals scoring 9.0 and above. Each one is a single item at a single price, so the multi-buy maths above doesn't apply. If you're building a routine from scratch, our guide to a skincare routine on a budget tells you which products to spend on first.
When beauty is cheapest in South Africa
Observations, not rules. January is gift-set season in reverse: the festive boxes come down hard and the full-size items inside are often the cheapest they'll be all year. Black Friday is the real moment for fragrance and hair tools, which hold their prices the rest of the year. Three-for-twos come round on a cycle and aren't worth waiting for. Sunscreen comes down in autumn, when the date on the tube starts to matter.
Before you pay
Do the per-tub sum. Check the single price at the brand's own store and one other pharmacy. Look for the expiry date on anything marked clearance.
Then read the returns line, because this is a category that doesn't take things back easily. At the time of review the largest pharmacy chain gives you 30 days but won't accept opened cosmetics or grooming items unless they're faulty, and a national online retailer applies the same rule to any beauty product or fragrance that's been used. If something arrives faulty, the Consumer Protection Act still applies, whatever the promo said. Our playbook on returns, expiry dates and loyalty schemes covers the policies shop by shop.

Frequently asked questions
Is three-for-two a good deal?
If you'd have bought all three at full price and they cost about the same, yes. If you added two items to qualify, you spent more today, not less.
How much are pharmacy loyalty points worth?
At the time of review the biggest pharmacy programme pays back about 2 percent of spend as cashback. Useful over a year, not a discount on today's basket.
Are gift sets cheaper than buying the products separately?
Sometimes. Add up the full-size items at their normal prices. If the set costs less than that, it's a saving. If it only wins once you count the minis, it isn't.
Can I return opened skincare or fragrance?
Usually not, unless it's faulty. Most retailers exclude opened cosmetics, grooming items and used fragrance from change-of-mind returns.
Where are the best beauty deals in South Africa?
The Personal Care and Wellness category on THE REAL DEAL ranks live skincare, fragrance, hair and wellness deals from the shops we track by REALRANK™, highest score first.
