Buying jewellery online in SA: certificates and returns

Buying jewellery online in South Africa? Resizing and returns, diamond certificates against valuations, pre-owned and grey watches, and insurance.

It's an anniversary ring. You ordered it on payday, it arrived three days later, and it's a size too small. The shop will resize it, and once it's resized, it's yours. No refunds on a ring that's been to the workbench.

Jewellery is expensive, personal and usually a surprise. That's the worst mix for a return. This is the South Africa checklist: sizing and engraving, certificates and what they prove, new against grey against pre-owned, return windows, and insurance.

Sizing when buying jewellery online

Resized, engraved and personalised pieces are final at most jewellers. At the time of review a national chain that owns several jewellery brands won't refund resized, engraved, repaired or special-order pieces, or earrings. It says rings can be resized only in limited circumstances, so confirm the size before any work starts.

If it's a surprise, borrow a ring the person wears on the right finger and have it measured. Or buy the ring unsized and resize it together afterwards. The return window closes the moment the jeweller picks up the tools.

Certificates and valuations

Two different documents that get confused. The grading certificate from a gemmological laboratory describes the stone: carat, cut, colour, clarity. It's worth asking for on any diamond of real value, and it's the thing to compare between jewellers.

The valuation is an estimate of what it would cost to replace the piece, for insurance. At the time of review one national chain describes its valuation as a quotation, with an assessment fee, valid for seven working days. Any ring "valued at" twice the price you're paying is a ring at its price with an insurance figure attached. Compare stones by certificate, not by valuation.

New, grey or pre-owned

Three ways to buy a watch, with three different warranties. New from an authorised dealer carries the brand's warranty, claimed through the brand's service centre. A grey-import watch has to carry a notice saying it came in without the brand's approval (Consumer Protection Act, section 25), and the brand's warranty usually won't apply.

Reconditioned or rebuilt pre-owned watches must carry a notice saying so too. At the time of review one pre-owned specialist offers an optional twelve-month warranty, excluding water damage, strap wear and aftermarket parts. Ask which of the three you're buying, and get it on the invoice. How a pre-owned price compares with new is its own question, and our guide to pre-owned priced against new and the 70 percent off trap covers it. For choosing the watch itself, read buying a watch in South Africa.

Return windows

Short. At the time of review one online watch retailer gives seven days for unworn pieces with packaging, tags and manuals. It excludes final-sale and clearance items, and manages warranty claims through the brand's service centre. A national chain gives 30 days on unused items with the tag attached.

Unworn means unworn. One dinner on a wrist makes it a worn watch. Try it on with the protective film still on the case back and the clasp.

Insurance

Add the piece to your household insurance the day it arrives, with the invoice, the certificate and a photograph. Many policies cap single items of jewellery unless they're specified, and the valuation is the document an insurer usually asks for. Ask your insurer what they need before you buy, so you can ask the jeweller for it at the same time.

Your rights, whatever the sticker says

Stones that fall out, clasps that fail and movements that stop are defects. The Consumer Protection Act gives you six months to return a faulty piece for repair, replacement or refund. It doesn't cover a size that's wrong, or a style you've gone off, once the piece has been altered.

Where REALRANK™ comes in

The certificate tells you what the diamond is. It doesn't tell you whether R18,000 is a fair price for it at this shop.

REALRANK™ reads six things about each live jewellery and watch deal from the shops we track: how deep the discount is, how much it saves in rand, how the price compares to other shops, whether the brand is one people search for, how recently the price dropped, and whether it's in stock. Frequently asked questions

Can I return a ring that's been resized?

Usually not. Resized, engraved and personalised pieces are final at most jewellers. Confirm the size before any work starts, or buy unsized and resize together.

What's the difference between a diamond certificate and a valuation?

A grading certificate describes the stone (carat, cut, colour, clarity) and is the thing to compare between jewellers. A valuation is an insurance replacement estimate, not a price anyone paid.

Does a pre-owned watch come with a warranty?

Sometimes, if the brand's own warranty hasn't run out. Some pre-owned specialists offer their own, often twelve months and sometimes optional. If you buy from a business, the six-month Consumer Protection Act defect right applies too.

How long do I have to return a watch bought online?

As little as seven days at some online watch retailers, unworn with packaging, tags and manuals, and up to 30 days at some national chains. Clearance and final-sale pieces are usually excluded.
